Succeeding the ever popular 750 the all new Shiver 900 has evolved from the Aprilia stable of Vee twin motorcycles with many of its features borne from the illustrious RSV4 and Tuono V4, in turn developed from the World Superbike championship winning machines.
The SHIVER 750 was a landmark motorcycle, being the first production bike to feature a Ride-by-Wire throttle and paving the way for Aprilia to be synonymous with cutting-edge technology today.
Similarly the new SHIVER 900 is a modern and evolutionary motorcycle, designed to satisfy a specific market segment. Featuring a new Euro 4 900 cc, V-twin engine, with a power output of 95 bhp and more importantly, a maximum torque of 90 Nm. This focus on maximising torque rather than power has resulted in an engine that combines strong acceleration with a surprising top speed, while maintaining power at 95 bhp means that Shiver 900 can still be ridden by A2 licence holders, following a simple dealer remap. Inline with its history, the new SHIVER 900 features an advanced electronics package that includes a three-level traction control that can also be de-activated, up rated Ride-By-Wire and the 4.3-inch TFT display shared with its V4-engined cousins, that allows connectivity with smartphones via the optional A-MP kit.
The new Euro 4 compliant engine
The new long stroke engine comes directly from the technological know how of the Aprilia Racing Department. This design gives an extremely smooth power delivery while the increased torque at medium speeds (90 Nm obtained at 6.500 rpm/min) gives improved acceleration throughout the rev range. The engine structure maintains the 90 degree angle between the two cylinders as on the Shiver 750,as well as the 4 valves per cylinder, double over head cam and liquid cooling.
A new, more efficient lubrication circuit is used, while the new Marelli 7SM ECU allows an advanced Traction Control system, adjustable to 3 levels and with the option to be turned off.
New injectors, that comply with the Euro 4 emission standard, are used and the injection pressure has been increased.
A 35 kw, A2 licence compatible, modified map is available at no extra cost.
Three bikes in one!
The pioneering SHIVER 750 was the first production motorcycle to adopt the Ride by Wire technology, a system designed to help improve the engine output control and increase riding pleasure. The latest generation of Ride-by-Wire used on the SHIVER 900 has no direct connection between the twistgrip and butterflies, which improves the accuracy of the system through the air metering, fuel and ignition and saves weight. Equipped with three “Modes”; “Sport” allows the rider to maximise the full performance of the engine with ultra sharp throttle response. “Touring” has the effect of smoothing out the throttle response providing the rider with a more relaxed and comfortable ride especially in town or traffic at lower speeds and with improved fuel economy. “Rain” delays the throttle action slightly for improved wet weather performance.
Aprilia’s chassis design is legendary and experience gained in Supermoto competition has gone into the development of the new SHIVER 900 layout.
The distinctive chassis incorporates a trellis upper in steel tubing, connected to wide spread aluminium lateral plates using high-resistance bolts. The combination formed by these elements give perfect torsional stiffness, which shows in on-road agility.
The lateral shock absorber positioning creates space for the exhaust system to have a shape and volume calibrated to maximise engine efficiency. The aluminium swingarm with reinforcement truss has exceptional stiffness values for this category of bike.
At the front, the new Kayaba forks with adjustment in compression and spring preload, have 41 mm stanchions and shell-cast brackets to support the radial brake calipers and forged aluminium yokes.
The 120 mm fork travel lets the rider smoothly tackle urban and open routes. The rear shock absorber, mounted to the side, is pivoted directly on the swingarm, following the cantilever layout and it is adjustable in spring preload and hydraulic rebound. Rear wheel travel is 130 mm Also new are the Tuono V4-derived three-spoke wheels, which are 0.9kg (front) and 1.3kg (rear) lighter than those found on the Shiver 750. This leads to a major reduction of the gyroscopic effect and therefore greater agility from the bike ,with improved suspension function thanks to the reduction of unsprung masses.
The new wheel rims are shod with a 120/70 front and a 180/55 rear tyre.
The braking system is equipped with two-channel, Continental ABS and offers greater stability and shorter stopping distance in critical situations.
Radial calipers and 320 mm front discs and a single piston caliper with a 240 mm rear disc inspire confidence, with braking efficiency further enhanced by metal braided hoses that eliminate the pressure variations associated with conventional pipes.
New Traction Control and display
The Traction Control system is adjustable with 3 levels whilst riding and enhances riding safety and enjoyment. The system acts both on ignition and motorised throttle valves making its intervention smooth and easy to manage.
The new SHIVER 900 features the same 4.3” TFT display that is fitted to the 2018 Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono 1100 V4.
The large screen allows all of the on- board information to be clearly displayed and highly legible at all times, thanks in part to its ability in adapting the background and font colours inline with the conditions detected by the light sensor. You can also incorporate your smartphone via the optional extra A-MP Aprilia Media player enabling internet access and bluetooth communication whilst on the move.
